National Credit Union Awards

Canada’s credit unions have always played a significant role in the well being of the communities they serve. CCUA recognizes and rewards these accomplishments through an annual awards program that acknowledges credit unions that exemplify the true nature of the co-operative spirit.

The National Credit Union Awards highlight fresh and effective programs that emphasize local economic initiatives, innovative solutions that improve the effectiveness of the credit union, and the ambitions of tomorrow's young leaders.

Hall of Fame Award

The Hall of Fame Award honours and celebrates leaders' extraordinary achievements that enhance the national system. Nominee should be an individual who has shown excellence in leadership in Canada and/or internationally, and whose outstanding accomplishments demonstrate their commitment and passion to the credit union system.

Previous Winners:

  • 2019: N/A
  • 2018: Henry Jansen was inducted to the Hall of Fame for his nearly 40 year career at the local, provincial and national levels of the credit union system. Henry's passionate support for credit unions demonstrates the fundamental aspects of what credit unions are all about: cooperation, collaboration, enthusiasm and energy. View video.

Social Responsibility Award

The National Credit Union Social Responsibility Award recognizes the leadership, innovation and advancement that credit unions are demonstrating in their social and environmental performance that creates shared value: integrating social and environmental impact into core business, using that integration to drive economic value. Over the years, credit unions have earned a reputation for their concern for community, often through philanthropy and community service. Today, credit unions are taking that a step further by challenging themselves to make community responsibility and sustainability a core part of their business. Through this Award, the Canadian Credit Union Association's Board of Directors are recognizing and celebrating the ways credit unions are leading in defining strategic approaches to social responsibility that will encourage and inspire the system as a whole

Winners:

  • 2019: Meridian Credit Union won for their My Commitment to Communities program, an employee giving program designed by our employees for our employees. The three key objectives of the program are to increase employee engagement at work; promote community involvement across our employee base; and differentiate the Meridian experience from that of our competitors.   • 2018: East Coast Credit Union won for their Building Stronger Communities Through Sustainable Practices Program. The program started with a commitment to investing in renewable energy, making East Coast more energy efficient and substantially reducing their environmental footprint. In addition to working with partners, and integrating the new approach throughout their credit union, this project also helped to change behaviour in the local community. View video

Community Economic Development Award - visual icon

Community Economic Development Award

The national Community Economic Development Award recognizes and honours the outstanding contribution credit unions make that enable action by people locally to create economic opportunities and better social conditions, particularly for those who are most disadvantaged. Through this award, the Canadian Credit Union Association's Board of Directors focuses national attention on the leadership role credit unions play in inspiring others to shape promising futures within their communities.

Winners:

  • 2019: East Coast Credit Union won for their Michelin Development Program which was created to support four communities affected by the loss of 1000 jobs at Michelin. It involved three community partners, East Coast Credit Union, Community Business Development Corporation (CBDC) and Michelin Development (Canada), coming together with a focus on creating employment in the impacted communities by providing funding that otherwise may not have been available.   • 2018: Libro Credit Union won for their Libro Cluster Program. The Libro Cluster involved a range of partners, projects and approaches in addressing a community opportunity. By focusing on both social innovation and social enterprise, while also spanning a large geographic area, the program demonstrated Libro Credit Union's genuine commitment to delivering a community development strategy that aligned with their purpose of growing prosperity in Southwestern Ontario. Innovation Award

The National Credit Union Innovation Award is designed to recognize credit union/caisse popularies for breakthrough products, services and processes that are either new or have undergone significant improvements and can serve as a model for other credit unions. We look to recognize innovations that have demonstrated substantial benefit to either the credit union/caisse populaire or member base. The Innovation award should recognize the credit union/caisse populaire– not specific individuals. The award can be submitted by a single credit union/caisse populaire or a group of credit unions working together to bring a solution to the market.


Winners:

  • 2019: Servus Credit Union won for their Patronage Advance Program which estimates how much profit sharing a member would earn over the next five years and provides them with that amount up front- with a catch. As part of this program the member must use the advance towards one of their financial goals. View video.
  • 2018: Vancity's Fair and Fast Loan™ Online program won for responding to an identified opportunity in the community, and implementing the detailed and focused planning process to bring the product to market, strongly demonstrating the intent of the Innovation Award. The Vancity team carefully considered how to build a tool that would quickly and easily meet the needs of the potential users, as well as delivering results for the credit union. By combining Vancity's values with the needs of members, this project hit all the right notes for innovation. View video.

Young Leader Award - visual icon

Young Leader Award

The National Credit Union Young Leaders Award recognizes young leaders in Canada’s credit union system. The award helps identify the best and brightest young employees, motivate them, and publicize their accomplishments to inspire others. In creating this award, the Canadian Credit Union's Board of Directors helps national leaders demonstrate strong support for young leadership.

Does your organization have any rising stars? Do they have well-defined accomplishments? Have they tackled any unusually large responsibilities in your credit union/caisse populaire or provincial/regional Central? Each year, up to five winners may be chosen for the National Credit Union Young Leaders Award, and only one of these winners will be selected as the scholarship recipient and receive tuition plus travel costs (economy class) to attend a leadership development program at a recognized university in Canada ($10,000 maximum).

Learning Excellence Award - visual icon

Learning Excellence Award

The National Credit Union Learning Excellence Award recognizes and honours a leader or initiative that demonstrates an outstanding contribution in the development of credit union employees. The Learning Excellence award is for credit unions who recognize that investment in people has a direct impact on the member experience and on the bottom line for the credit union. This award acknowledges the role that skilled employees play in the success of their credit union, and the credit union ensures that employees are as prepared as possible to serve the needs of their members. This award recognizes innovative approaches to Human Resource Management, Learning & Development and/or Talent Management resulting in significant business improvement and recognize credit union achievements. Ongoing development of credit union employees is critical at a time when multiple factors are reshaping our industry and our workforce.

Winners:

  • 2019: Libro Credit Union won for their LEAN at Libro program which is a set of methodologies that have been integrated into Libro's vibrant culture in order to deliver increased customer value. LEAN’s main pillars include Owner value, respecting people, and continuous learning. View video.
  • 2018: First West Credit Union won the 2018 Learning Excellence Award for their Invest in People, First West Certification Program (FWCP). By creating a program that recognizes the varied needs of a diverse staff, the program demonstrates the effective use of business resources to develop and implement a comprehensive approach to learning. It also recognizes that knowledgeable, confident staff who have a deep understanding of their organization and its services are able to deliver success for the credit union as well as for members. The program is resonating across all parts of the credit union. View video

AIME Awards / Best of Marketing Award

The Achievements in Marketing Excellence (AIME) Awards showcase the most impressive, effective and creative marketing and communications campaigns seen in the credit union system. Earn the respect and admiration you deserve from credit union marketers from across Canada by entering to win a highly coveted AIME. Any credit union, central or supplier to the credit union industry may enter.

Winning submissions are recognized at the AIME Awards Gala held in conjunction with the CCUA National Conference each year. The highest scored entry across all AIME categories is awarded CCUA's Best in Marketing Award.

What does it take to win?
Winning an AIME Award requires a balance of quality ideas, outstanding execution, and tangible results. All entries are reviewed based on standard marketing criteria.

How to enter?
Please review the 2019 AIME Call for Submissions Booklet for full entry details. Once you’ve reviewed the requirements, enter online via the Submission Portal.

Winners:

  • 2019: Fusion Credit Union, formed in April 2018 through the merger of Catalyst Credit Union and Vanguard Credit Union, won for their brand building campaign. While both legacy credit unions were strong and performing well, the amalgamation of the two was an opportunity to create more for each company’s members, employees and communities.View video.
  • 2018: Libro Credit Union won the second annual Best of Marketing Award for their Libro Credit Union website redesign. The redesigned Libro website is visually appealing, easy to navigate and beautifully executed. The team kept the user firmly in mind as they designed and built the new site, making the website experience easy, enjoyable and most of all, functional. View video
